CLAWS China Newsletter I Volume 13
From 16 to 31 August 2025, China’s domestic scene featured Xi Jinping’s recent articles “harping on” the ‘private sector growth’, ‘wartime resistance spirit’, and Tibet-focused pledges alongside anti-corruption inspections in Shandong and personnel reshuffles in infrastructure portfolios, with 10 new envoys appointed. The PLA bolstered ideological training, criticised US and Japanese military moves, and engaged regionally with India, Mongolia, and tensions at Second Thomas Shoal. Diplomatically, China is actively pursuing the establishment of new trilateral and quadrilateral frameworks across Asia and a five-year ASEAN action plan. Economically, China has promoted trade fairs and technological innovation as part of its response to U.S. semiconductor restrictions. Developments in battery technology, 6G, and space exploration reflect the country’s broader effort to achieve technological self-reliance amid intensifying global competition.
