October 2026 saw heightened Russia–Ukraine hostilities alongside renewed diplomatic initiatives and uncertainty surrounding US policy. Germany expanded military and energy support for Kyiv, while European nations enhanced security measures against Russian cyberattacks, sabotage and drone threats. The EU pushed for a greater role in peace negotiations and explored options to address Ukraine’s €70 billion funding gap. Inflation and rising public debt added to Europe’s economic challenges, while trade tensions with China intensified. Russia strengthened ties with Beijing and explored peace efforts with Washington. Canada deepened cooperation with Türkiye, while Argentina pursued LNG investments and EnergyX signed a $2 billion lithium supply deal. Advances in AI, photonic chips and counter-drone technologies underscored growing strategic competition.
