An organic air arm for the Army had long been recognised as a strategic imperative. The imperative assumed decisive urgency in the early 1980s. Formal sanction for the creation of Army Aviation was accorded in 1986, with a three-year transition window granted to forge an entirely new ecosystem for maintenance, engineering, and logistics. However, the true crucible was not in the domain of flying, but was in engineering and aviation logistics— disciplines that had, until then, been the exclusive preserve of the Air Force.
The challenge was embraced by engineers and technicians of the Corps of EME, alongside logistics officers of the Ordnance Corps, who stepped forward with exemplary resolve. It was the finest and most professionally driven officers and men from these arms who volunteered for aviation. They assumed their new roles with the fluency and assurance of specialists born to the vocation. Notwithstanding inevitable teething challenges, the transition was affected with remarkable continuity. The fleet remained airborne.
Their finest hour came during the Kargil War. In the forward sectors of Dras, Kargil, and the Mushkoh Valley terrain, under direct enemy observation and artillery fire, Army Aviation engineers and technicians accomplished what bordered on the miraculous. They serviced aircraft in snow and rain, in failing light, and more often than not through in hours of darkness, guided only by handheld torches and the barest of tools.
They executed first line inspections, complex servicing, battle damage repairs, and rapid refuelling with extraordinary alacrity. Turnaround times were compressed to the absolute minimum, ensuring maximum aircraft availability. The ultimate testament to their professionalism was thousands of operational missions flown. Not a single aircraft aborted a mission or executed a forced landing for technical reasons.
Benchmarks once deemed unattainable were surpassed including the replacement of an engine at 17,700 feet, under direct enemy observation. The performance of Army Aviation’s engineers and technicians during Kargil remains without parallel in military annals. It merits nothing less than the nation’s profoundest salute.
In an extraordinary footnote to history, Army Aviation also used Hasselblad camera, the very make carried to the moon by the Apollo 11 crew. Where NASA once processed its film, here in Kargil it was our own aviation technicians who erected a makeshift darkroom in a mountain reentrant and processed countless rolls of reconnaissance imagery in the field, delivering critical confirmations to commanders in real time.
The achievement of aviation logistics was no less extraordinary. The supply chain never faltered. There was no pause, no hesitation. Inventory management and provisioning were executed with flawless precision. Spares and expendables arrived with the inevitability of clockwork, ensuring that operational tempo was never compromised.
The Kargil War, therefore, is more than a chronicle of courage and valour. It is the definitive validation of a doctrine of an integral air arm for the Army. Conceived by the Army, built by the Army, sustained by the Army. Proven in battle by the Army. The Army Aviation.
